The Writing Coach Podcast 17: Overwhelm

Multiple clients, multiple topics, multiple deadlines … freelance writers deal with a lot of moving parts. Today we’ll cover the three kinds of thoughts causing you to feel overwhelm, and what you can do to remedy it.

I won’t say that overwhelm is a popular topic amongst my coaching clients, but it certainly comes up a lot.

As freelance writers, we have multiple clients, multiple topics, multiple deadlines. There are projects in various stages of the pipeline: stories you want to pitch or are following up on, stories waiting for edits, stories that are being edited by a committee of a dozen people in real time on Google Docs.

December holidays–being invited to endless parties, feeling left out when you see other people celebrating on Facebook, too much booze, not enough drinks, lots of family members, missing loved ones–bring an extra dimension.

We look at all these bits and parts of freelancing and our lives in general and feel overwhelmed, and so it’s easy to conclude that all these things are collectively causing you to feel overwhelmed. In reality, it’s how you’re thinking about those things that causes–or doesn’t cause–overwhelm.

In today’s podcast, we look at the three main causes of overwhelm and how to find relief.
