The Writing Coach Podcast Backstory

I began freelancing full-time in 2004. After a decade, I started coaching other writers. Initially, my focus was on the business of freelance journalism: How to pitch a story idea, how to get more clients, how to raise your rates. Practical goals where the results are relatively straightforward to measure.

The coaching worked. The writers I’ve worked with have broken into places like The Guardian, The New York Times, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, as well as many other places you’ve never heard of because they’re very niche or local.

At the end of their coaching program, I’d ask, “What’s changed for you?” Overwhelmingly the thing that they would cite as part of their feedback was an increase in confidence.

This wasn’t just people who were getting those big bylines. This was also true for people who were approaching and doing their work in a different kind of way.

Confidence doesn’t appear on the day you get that big byline. You become more confident in the steps along the way, how you’re doing your research, how you’re identifying your clients, the fact that you’re sending out a pitch on the day that you say you’re going to. That’s where the shift happens. There are so many opportunities to build your confidence before publication day.

And because the individuals I’ve worked with so highly valued the harder-to-measure mindset shifts (such as building confidence, dismantling imposter syndrome, and generally getting out of their own way), I decided to create a podcast to bring coaching to a larger audience.
