In simple terms, your ideal clients are assigning stories now, are able to meet or exceed your desired rates, and have potential for ongoing work. You likely have some other criteria that’s important to you as well. If you’re not clear about who you’re looking for, it will be hard to seek and find them—and can even be hard to articulate why your current clients are ones to drop.

I recently coached two different writers with full schedules who were both hanging onto less than ideal clients. One writer was working with a relatively low-paying publication; the other writer had a relatively high-paying publication. Which do you think was the one who felt they couldn’t afford to say no to the work?
